Akins shines, dishes out 25 points to lead Corbin past Pineville

PINEVILLE — Corbin coach Tony Pietrowski admitted games like his team’s matchup with Pineville on Tuesday will do nothing but make his Redhounds better in the long run.

The two teams barreled throughout their matchup with Corbin doing just enough to pick up a 77-73 win over the Mountain Lions.

“Postseason like atmosphere tonight,” Pietrowski said. “It will really make us better and more prepared for the upcoming week. Pineville is an impressive team. They have some real talent and depth.

“Sometimes you just have to find ways to gut out a win and thought we did that tonight,” he added. “Ryder continues to prove he’s one of the top freshman in the state. Eli battled and made some huge plays for us as well. Overall, our entire team played with great effort. Some areas need fine tuning before we head into district play. Our team will put in the work to do so.”

Freshman Ryder Akins continues to shine, scoring 25 points, and joining the 1,000-point club in the process while Evan Ellis added 16 points and Eli Pietrowski finished with 15 points as the Redhounds improved to 17-9.

Pineville’s Sawyer Thompson led all scorers with 31 points while Ashton Moser and Jeremiah Becky added 11 points apiece. The loss dropped the Mountain Lions to 19-8.
