South Laurel hitting stride, defeats Woodford County, 58-48

LEXINGTON — The South Laurel Cardinals are hitting stride at the right time.

With only a couple of weeks remaining in regular season play, Jeff Davis’ squad has now won seven in a row, including Saturday’s 58-48 win over Woodford County in the Jock Sutherland Classic.

“Really proud of how we played the first half,” Davis said. “We need to do a better job at finish quarters and maintaining our energy throughout the game. Had a lot of guys step up and get a good team win.”

The Cardinals (17-6) put on another impressive defensive display, limiting the Yellow Jackets to only 11 points in the first half before putting the game away by outscoring Woodford County, 13-12, in the fourth quarter.

Jordan Mabe turned in another stellar effort, scoring 25 points while hitting 11-of-12 free throw attempts. Kaiden McQueen added 12 points while Colton Rawlings finished with 11 points.

South Laurel built a 16-8 edge in the first quarter behind six points from Mabe and four points apiece from McQueen and Max Fullmer.

The Cardinals outscored Woodford County, 13-3, in the second quarter while extending their lead to 29-11 at halftime.

The Yellow Jackets rallied in the third quarter, outscoring South Laurel, 25-16, while cutting their deficit to 45-36 entering the fourth quarter.

McQueen added six more points in the final eight minutes while Rawlings knocked down a 3-pointer to secure the win for the Cardinals.
