CORBIN — Whitley County’s snapped an eight-game losing skid to Corbin on Monday by stunning the Lady Redhounds with a 73-57 victory.
The Lady Colonels’ last win over Corbin came on Jan. 28, 2021, pulling out a 92-89 double overtime victory.
The improved Whitley County to 15-7 overall and 2-3 against 50th District opponents while the Lady Redhounds’ struggles continue.
Corbin is now 2-5 during its past seven games, and fell to 14-7, and 2-3 against district opponents.
“Great win for our team tonight,” Whitley County coach Michael Petrey said. “I’m really proud of the way our team competed. Any time you win on the road in the 50th District you have accomplished something the team can build on the remainder of the season.
“We still have some things we need to clean up, but our girls respond to every challenge we present to them,” he added. “I thought each one of them stepped up to the challenge tonight. Again, I’m very proud of our team.”
The Lady Colonels took charge early, taking an 18-15 lead in the first quarter behind seven points efforts from Aubree Clemens and Maddy Hopkins.
Whitley County turned its defensive play up a notch in the second quarter, limiting the Lady Redhounds to only nine points as the Lady Colonels’ lead grew to 34-24 at halftime.
Corbin managed to cut its deficit to 51-42 entering the fourth quarter but Clemens and Hopkins continued their impressive play, combining to score 15 points during the third quarter.
Jonna Rice knocked down all six of her free throw attempts in the fourth quarter while as a team, the Lady Colonels hit 13-of-16 free throw attempts to seal the win down the stretch.
Clemens led Whitley County with 25 points while Hopkins added 23 points. Khylea Collier added nine points while Cambree Price and Rice added seven points apiece. Autumn Sawyers chipped in two points.
Lydia King led Corbin with 19 points while Raegan Walker scored 13 points and Kylie Clem finished with 11 points.
