ONE GAME CLOSER: A potential Corbin vs. Boyle County Class 4A state title is close to becoming a reality

It’s still a little early to chalk both Corbin and Boyle County into the finals of the Class 4A state title game with both teams needing to win next Friday for the matchup to happen but the whispers have already began.

Well actually the whispers have been there for three years but with both teams winning their respective regional titles on Friday, the dream state title matchup is closer to becoming a reality.

As soon as the final seconds ticked off Campbell Field’s scoreboard, my phone was going off with high school football fans in general wanting to know if I knew the final score of the Boyle County/Lexington Catholic game.

Which I did, and yes, the Rebels pulled off a 41-21 victory which is setting up this — a Corbin win over Franklin County and a Boyle County win over Louisville Central on Friday sets up a Class 4A championship showdown between the Redhounds and Rebels.

So what would make this matchup so interesting?

If I need to explain, then you might have been living under a rock the past few years.

With that said, I’ll explain.

Boyle County coach Justin Haddix is just a couple of years removed from being the head coach at Corbin.

During his stay as the Redhound coach, Haddix guided Corbin to two Class 4A state title game appearances but both times the Redhounds fell short.

Once he left Corbin, and went to coach Boyle County, Haddix continued the Rebel magic and tradition by guiding the black and gold to two state titles.

The Redhounds haven’t won a state crown during the same time span but coach Tom Greer has done a fantastic job, garnering a 33-3 record since being named Corbin’s head coach and now his Redhounds have the highest RPI rating in Class 4A while being only two wins away from bringing Corbin its first state crown in 30 years.

With that said, some of the Corbin Redhound fans I’m friends with and talk to daily, would love to see their team get a win over Haddix and his Rebels.

Me?

Well, a potential Corbin vs. Boyle County matchup is a dream come true for journalists.

Former coach vs. his former team with all the marbles on the line.

And of course, the icing on the cake would be a Redhound win on Kroger Field in two weeks.

But first things first, both Corbin and Boyle County have to take care of business Friday or this column means nothing.
