WINCHESTER — Whitley County’s historic volleyball season came to an end Saturday as the Lady Colonels fell to Notre Dame in four sets during the semifinals of the KHSAA State Volleyball Tournament.

The Lady Colonels, who became the first 13th Region volleyball team to reach the state semifinals, finished their remarkable season with a 39-5 record after falling to the Pandas, 24-26, 25-19, 14-25, and 14-25.

Whitley County battled Notre Dame throughout a tightly contested opening set, but the Pandas managed to escape with a 26-24 victory to take an early advantage.

The Lady Colonels responded in impressive fashion during the second set, bouncing back with a 25-19 victory to even the match at one set apiece.

With a berth in the state championship match on the line, Notre Dame regained control in the third set, posting a 25-14 victory before closing out the match with another 25-14 win in the fourth.

Despite the loss, Whitley County’s season will go down as one of the most successful in 13th Region volleyball history.

Under coach David Halcomb, the Lady Colonels captured 39 victories and advanced farther in the state tournament than any other 13th Region volleyball program.

Whitley County reached the Final Four after defeating Bowling Green in four sets during the quarterfinals, 25-23, 25-27, 25-23, 25-17.

The victory over Bowling Green secured the Lady Colonels’ place in regional history and gave them an opportunity to compete for a spot in the state championship match.
