South Laurel closes regular season with 4-0 win over Oneida Baptist

ONEIDA — South Laurel wrapped up regular-season play with a 4-0 victory over Oneida Baptist, finishing with a 13-4 record heading into district tournament action.

The Cardinals got goals from Blake Robinson, Drew Allen on a penalty kick, Bryce Jones and Zayden Chumbley.

South Laurel carried a 1-0 lead into halftime before making adjustments that helped the Cardinals pull away in the second half.

“We had a 1-0 lead going into halftime and made some adjustments,” South Laurel coach Brooks Cawood said. “Ryan Martinez got a yellow card early in the second half. With district play coming up, we let him rest for the remainder of the match.”

Cawood said Drew Allen helped spark the Cardinals through the midfield as South Laurel began creating more opportunities.

“Drew Allen played excellent in the midfield and really helped our offense get going,” Cawood said.

Bryce Jones also contributed on the offensive end after anchoring the South Laurel defense throughout the season.

“Bryce Jones has been an amazing leader throughout the season as the anchor of our defense,” Cawood said. “He came up big on a nice header from Blake Robinson’s corner kick.”

With the regular season complete, South Laurel now turns its attention to postseason play.

“District play starts next week and we have a few things to work on in order to compete in the tournament.”
