Whitley County sweeps Corbin on the road, improves to 23-2

CORBIN — Whitley County picked up another rivalry victory, sweeping Corbin 25-20, 25-12, 25-16 on the road.

The Lady Colonels improved to 23-2 after settling into the match late in the opening set and carrying that momentum through the final two.

“This was a very nice win for us on the road,” Whitley County coach David Halcomb said. “Our girls have played a lot of volleyball the last three weeks and I know they are tired. We actually didn’t practice yesterday, just to hopefully get their legs back under them. I think the day of rest helped them.”

Halcomb said Whitley County had to manage its emotions early in the rivalry matchup before finding a consistent rhythm.

“Our girls were playing with a little too much emotion early on, but that’s to be expected in a rivalry match like this,” Halcomb said. “I thought we settled in towards the end of the first set and got into a good rhythm that continued into the remainder of the match.”

Whitley County then took control, winning the second set 25-12 before closing out the sweep with a 25-16 victory in the third.

“All our girls stepped up at opportune times and did their job well,” Halcomb said. “Our serving was really good and our girls consistently hit their spots.”

It was also a strong night throughout the Whitley County program, with the freshman and junior varsity teams both earning 2-0 victories.

“I’m also proud of our freshman and JV teams for coming up with 2-0 wins and a great night for Whitley Volleyball,” Halcomb said.

The Lady Colonels will have another quick turnaround as they head to Louisville for the Jefferson County Invitational.

“We have another busy weekend as we head to Louisville tomorrow to participate in the Jefferson County Invitational.”
