WILLIAMSBURG — Whitley County found itself facing a three-goal halftime deficit before a spirited second-half comeback came up just short in a 3-2 loss to Middlesboro.
“We started the first half flat, lacking intensity and determination,” Whitley County coach Becky Prewitt said. “Middlesboro capitalized on the opportunity and built a 3-0 lead by halftime.”
The Lady Colonels responded after the break, showing the urgency that Prewitt felt was missing during the opening 40 minutes.
Jerrica Shepherd started the comeback by finding the back of the net for Whitley County. Kierra Mullins followed with another goal, pulling the Lady Colonels within one at 3-2.
“In the second half, however, Whitley responded with greater urgency and energy with the team scoring twice, Jerrica Shepherd netting the first goal, and Kierra Mullins adding the second,” Prewitt said.
Whitley County’s second-half effort put the Lady Colonels back in position to challenge for the win, but Middlesboro was able to protect its one-goal advantage and hold on for the 3-2 victory.
