LONDON — Kylee Woods scored the game-winning goal in the final minute as South Laurel rallied from an early deficit to defeat Middlesboro, 2-1, in girls soccer action.
Middlesboro grabbed a 1-0 advantage on a penalty kick early in the first half, but the Lady Cardinals responded before halftime.
Malia French assisted Lanea French on the equalizer, sending the teams into the break tied at 1-1.
The match remained deadlocked throughout most of the second half before Woods delivered in the final minute, finding the back of the net to complete South Laurel’s comeback.
Goalkeeper Heaven Smith also played a key role in the victory, recording more than six saves to keep the Lady Cardinals in position to win.
“Coming back from 1-0 (penalty kick by Middlesboro) in the beginning of the first half, we ended up tying the game before halftime (assist Malia French and goal by Lanea French), and Kylee Woods with the game-winning goal in the last minute of the game,” South Laurel coach Amy Corum said. “Our goalkeeper Heaven Smith also had over six saves as well.
“These girls fought through the heat and played like a team,” she added. “I’m proud that they kept their heads up and just played their game.”
