Three 13th Region Entries Move On at State Tennis Tournament

ASHLAND — Corbin’s Bella Lopez and Bell County’s Emma Winkler advanced to next week’s KHSAA Singles State Tennis Tournament’s round of 16 by picking up two wins apiece on Wednesday while Clay County’s doubles duo of Rachel Davidson and Abby Rogers accomplished the same feat in the double tournament. 

Singles Wrapup

Corbin’s Bella Lopez won her first round match, 6-0, 6-0 over Hazard’s L. Akwmon, and cruised to an easy, 6-0, 6-0 win over Johnson Central’s E. Triplett to advance to the round of 16 in the singles state tournament. 

Bell County’s Emma Winkler captured victories in both of her matches today and will be joining Corbin’s Lopez in next week’s round of 16.

Winkler won her first match over Hazard’s M. Whitlock, 6-0, 6-1 before capturing a 6-0, 6-0 second round win over Ashland’s C. Yates.

Harlan County’s Kalista Dunn won her first match before falling in second round action, losing to Hazard’s H. Davidson, 6-4, 0-6, 0-1 (3-10). 

Doubles Wrapup 

North Laurel’s Kaylee Moore and Natalie Robinson won their first match by default, and fell in the second round 6-4, 6-1, to Boyd County’s H. Barnett and B. Smith. 

Clay County’s Rachel Davidson and Abby Rogers will advance to the round of 16 next week after winning their first match, 6-1, 6-4 over Martin County’s C. May and H. Kaibori while picking up a 7-6, 6-2 win in second round action. 

Corbin’s Raylen Lester and Emma Faulkner fell in the first round to Boyd County 2-6, 6-7 (11).
