WILLIAMSBURG — Whitley County’s 19-game winning streak came to an end Monday as Sayre defeated the Colonels 3-1.
The loss dropped Whitley County to 31-3 overall. The Colonels had not lost since April 11 against Danville.
Despite the setback, Ethan Allen turned in another strong performance on the mound. The senior allowed three runs, only two earned, on three hits over 5.2 innings while striking out six.
Sayre struck early with two runs in the first inning before the Colonels answered with a run in the second inning. Caden Mountjoy drove in the run with an RBI groundout.
The Colonels threatened throughout the game, finishing with five hits, including a pair of doubles from Ty Petrey. Cooper Parman, Shane Parker and Hillard also recorded hits.
Sayre added an insurance run in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 3-1.
Trey Walton and Eli Powers combined for 1.1 scoreless innings in relief for Whitley County with Powers striking out two batters in the seventh.
