Seven-run sixth inning leads to South Laurel win

LONDON — South Laurel broke things open with a seven-run sixth inning Monday, pulling away for a 13-6 win over Breathitt County.

Locked in a tight game early, the Cardinals (20-9) led 6-5 heading into the bottom of the sixth before pushing across seven runs to put it out of reach and secure their fourth straight victory, and 10th out of their past 11 games.

“I’m proud of my seniors tonight,” South Laurel coach Trey Smith said. “They have been great ambassadors of our program. Tonight was no different. This makes four years in a row we have reached the 20-win mark. You don’t accomplish that consistently without great players and great people in your program. It’s a great day to be a Cardinal.”

South Laurel pounded out 15 hits in the win with Carter Kelley leading the charge. Kelley went 4-for-5 with four RBI. Quinn Strunk added a strong effort, finishing with three hits and four RBI while Reece Noble set the tone at the top of the lineup with three hits and three runs scored.

Bryson Turner chipped in two hits and two RBI, and Wilkelver Gaviria-Zuleta added a pair of hits and an RBI.

Waylon Hensley picked up the win, working five innings while allowing five runs and striking out four. Noble closed it out over the final two innings.
