Colonels hang on to capture eighth win in a row

SOMERSET — It wasn’t the prettiest of wins, but Whitley County managed to get the job done.

The Colonels (10-2) jumped out to a 4-0 lead before holding on to defeat Southwestern on Thursday, 4-3.

“Really flat day for us,” Whitley County coach Jeremy Shope said of his team’s eighth straight win. “Had no energy about us. Had a couple guys not feeling well. Hopefully, we bring it tomorrow. We needed a wake up call. We’re lucky to come away with a win.”

Henry Bowling came up with two hits and two runs scored while Kip Allen had a hit and two RBI. Ty Petrey and Luke Hillard both finished with a hit and an RBI apiece.

Hillard got the win, pitching 5.2 innings while allowing one hit and three earned runs. He struck out eighth batters. EJ Allen picked up the save, tossing the final 1.1 innings while giving up only two hits. He also struck out two batters.
