Melton, Powenski power Knox Central past Clay County

MANCHESTER — Hayden Melton and Matthew Powenski delivered the big swings Monday in a key 13th Region battle.
Melton homered and drove in two runs while Powenski added a home run and two RBI to lead Knox Central to a 6-3 win over Clay County.
The Panthers (5-5) jumped out early, scoring two runs in the first inning before adding another run in the second. Knox Central continued to push across run in the third inning, scoring three more to take control of the game.
Melton led the way at the plate, finishing with two hits, two runs scored and two RBI while Powenski added a pair of hits and drove in two runs.
Jonathan Hobbs chipped in with a hit and an RBI while Nate Miller, Trevor Smith, Jathan Collins and Tate Marcum each added hits in the win.
On the mound, freshman Bentley Cobb was dominant in relief, tossing three scoreless innings while allowing no hits and striking out five to earn the win. Hayden Melton closed the door with a scoreless inning, striking out one to secure the save.
Russell Mills got the start, working 2.2 innings and striking out five, while Zach Carroll also saw action in relief.
