Whitley County broke things open late Thursday, scoring eight runs over the final two innings to pull away for a 14-8 win over Crescent while improving to 9-1 during the process.
The Colonels pounded out 14 hits on the night and used a big sixth and seventh inning to turn a tight game into a comfortable win.
“Luke Hillard had his best pitching outing of the year,” Whitley County coach Jeremy Shope said. “He was fabulous. Every one of his pitches were a plus today. Had great rhythm. He continues to pitch like that it’s really going to help us. Crescent had a really good lineup. Offensively, we were really good today. I see our confidence growing at the plate. Exciting to see. We play another good team tomorrow. Go Colonels.”
Cooper Parman led the charge at the plate, going 3-for-5 with five RBI and two runs scored while Luke Hillard added three hits, three RBI, and one run scored. Ethan Allen and Henry Bowling each had two hits with Bowling scoring three time while Allen drove in a run, and scored twice.
Whitley County got on the scoreboard early with four runs in the first inning, but Crescent answered late to keep it close before the Colonels delivered the knockout punch in the final two innings.
On the mound, Hillard picked up the win coming in relief of Parman, tossing five innings while allowing just two hits and striking out nine.
