BEREA — Behind big nights from Jonathan Hobbs and Tate Marcum at the plate, Knox Central nearly pulled off a road win before falling just short in a 7-6 loss to Madison Southern on Monday.
Hobbs paced the Panthers at the plate, finishing with two hits, a run scored and two walks while Marcum delivered a strong performance with three hits and an RBI. Matthew Powenski added a run and an RBI, and Eli Ramsey drove in two runs, helping Knox Central (2-1) rack up 10 hits in the contest.
Knox Central jumped out early, scoring three runs in the first inning.
The Panthers added runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings, but couldn’t hold off Madison Southern’s late push.
The Eagles answered with a three-run third inning, then broke a 4-4 tie with a three-run sixth to take the lead for good.
On the mound, Trevor Smith worked 2.2 innings, allowing three runs while striking out four. Zach Carroll and Hayden Melton also saw action, taking the loss in relief.
