Culler shines during Cardinals’ win over Leslie County

WILLIAMSBURG — Behind a dominant outing on the mound from Jacob Culler and a balanced offensive attack led by Reece Noble, Carter Kelley and Jamison West, South Laurel rolled to a 13-1 win over Leslie County on Monday.

Culler was in control from the start, tossing a two-hit complete game with nine strikeouts, allowing just one run while walking two in five strong innings.

“I’m very proud of our guys,” South Laurel coach Trey Smith said “They brought all three phases to the game tonight. It was a nice bounce win off the weekend. We had some young players step up tonight and play really well in their first varsity experience. Jacob Culler threw a very efficient game on the mound.”

At the plate, South Laurel (3-1) spread the production throughout the lineup.

Noble scored twice and drove in a run, Kelley added two hits, two runs and an RBI, and West scored three runs while reaching base three times. Wilkelver Gaviria-Zuleta chipped in with two RBI and a run scored, while Brody Garland and Bryson Turner each drove in runs.

The Cardinals wasted no time taking control, scoring three runs in the first inning before adding five more runs in the second to build an 8-0 cushion.

After Leslie County scored a run in the third, South Laurel responded with a five-run fourth inning to put the game away.
