Lady Cardinals open season with 5-2 win over Mercer County

HARRODSBURG — South Laurel pitcher Kenzie Williams tossed a complete game, seven-hitter while striking out 13 batters to lead the Lady Cardinals past Mercer County, 5-2.

The game was scoreless until the fourth inning when the Lady Cardinals broke through with three runs.

The Lady Titans cut their deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth before South Laurel added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh.

“Great way to start the season against a very talented Mercer County team,” South Laurel  coach Carly Mink said. “We were able to make some very key defensive plays when Mercer had runners in scoring position.

“Kenzie started and finished strong with 13 strikeouts and no walks,” she added. “Offensively, we struggled early but were able to make adjustments throughout the game and get some timely hits.”

Morgan Jackson led the way at the plate for the Lady Cardinals with three hits, two doubles, and one run scored while Ryleigh Bretz delivered two hits, an RBI, and scored once. Kiley Dunaway delivered a hit and two RBI while Bailey Frazier finished with a hit and an RBI. Williams had two hits while Aubrie Messer had a hit and an RBI. Lexi Messer also had a hit.
