No. 9 North Laurel knocks off No. 17 Ryle, 69-63

UNION — Eddie Mahan’s North Laurel Lady Jaguars capped off regular season play in fine fashion, defeating No. 17 Ryle, 69-63.

“Great team win tonight,” North Laurel coach Eddie Mahan said. “This was the definition of a complete team effort. We don’t come out on top without contributions from every single kid who stepped on the floor. From the opening tip to the final horn, everyone embraced their role, trusted one another, and competed at a high level. Whether it showed up in the box score or not, every player made winning plays that mattered.”

The win improved North Laurel to 20-6 as Haley Combs and Mariella Claybrook scored 19 points apiece. Laylee Phillips added 15 points while Bella Lewis scored 13 points, and Bella Mahan finished with three points.

“What I loved most was the unselfishness and energy,” Mahan said. “The girls communicated, shared the basketball, defended with purpose, and stayed locked in for four quarters. When we needed a stop, someone stepped up. When we needed a bucket, someone answered. That kind of balance and belief in each other is what makes this group special.

“This is exactly the type of game you want to close the regular season with,” he added. “It builds confidence, sharpens our focus, and reminds us of what we’re capable of when we play together. Now the real season begins. If we carry this mindset, toughness, and team first attitude into the postseason, we’ll give ourselves a great opportunity to keep playing for a while. Proud of this group and excited for what’s ahead.”
