Round Five for the Crown: Corbin vs. Whitley, One Last Time

MANCHESTER — The stage is set for yet another classic in one of the 13th Region’s fiercest rivalries. 

Corbin and Whitley County will meet for the fifth time this season on Tuesday night, with the 13th Region championship hanging in the balance.

Both squads advanced in dominant fashion during Monday’s semifinals. The Lady Redhounds rolled past 52nd District champion Harlan County, 25-21, 25-12, 25-16, while defending regional champion Whitley County swept 49th District winner North Laurel, 25-13, 25-17, 25-11.

Corbin has taken three of the previous four meetings this season. 

Krystal Jones’ Lady Redhounds won the Class 2A, Section 7 title game on Aug. 30 (25-14, 25-15) and followed up with another sweep on Sept. 4 (25-15, 25-15, 25-23). 

They claimed a thrilling five-set victory on Oct. 2 (21-25, 25-20, 13-25, 25-23, 18-16) before the Lady Colonels evened the score in emphatic fashion, capturing the 50th District title on Oct. 21 (25-23, 25-9, 25-19).

Whitley County enters Tuesday’s championship with a 34-5 record and a region-best .6550 RPI, while Corbin stands at 25-13 with a .60693 RPI. 

Historically, Corbin holds the upper hand in the all-time series, leading 49-33 across 82 meetings.
