Colonels moving on with 5-3 win over South Laurel

LONDON — Whitley County is moving on in the 49th District Boys’ Soccer Tournament after defeating South Laurel, 5-3, on Monday night.

The Colonels were led by standout scorer Rizzo Cima, who netted four goals. Bryson Mahan turned in a stellar performance as well, adding one goal and three assists, while Kadence Grubb also chipped in with an assist.

With the victory, Whitley County improved to 12-7-1 on the season and secured a spot in Wednesday’s semifinal matchup against top-seeded North Laurel at 6 p.m.

The Jaguars won the only regular-season meeting between the two teams on Sept. 2 by a 9-1 margin.

South Laurel, which struck first on Monday before the Colonels responded with a strong finish, wrapped up its season with a 7-8-2 record.

“Very proud of our guys, it’s our fall break and a few guys are out on vacation which hurt us a bit,” Whitley County coach Michael Branham said. “We came out flat and conceded first, but we were resilient tonight. Very pleased with our attack and the way our midfield and defense stepped up in the last 20 minutes.”
