LONDON — South Laurel coach Brooks Cawood had hopes his Cardinals would begin to put something together before the 49th District Tournament begins next week, but instead they suffered a 5-1 setback to Somerset on Monday.
The loss drops South Laurel to 5-7-2 with two more regular season games remaining.
“Going in to the half down 2-0, I felt like we had a good halftime discussion on what we needed to do as a team to compete better,” Cawood said. “We had some good chances in the second half but a failed penalty kick attempt to put the match took a little out of us. We did find a way to convert a corner kick on a nice header from Jase Jones.
“After that, Somerset locked it in and started scoring at will, it seemed,” he added. “We played pretty flat tonight and I was disappointed in the lack of effort that just didn’t seem to come out of our squad.”
