Colonels hang tough before falling to Rowan County in Kentucky 2A Boys’ Soccer State Tournament

WILLIAMSBURG — Whitley County held its own during the Kentucky 2A Boys’ State Soccer Tournament first round action before falling to Rowan County, 2-1.

The loss dropped the Colonels to 7-5-1 on the season.

“The first half was a defensive battle with neither team scoring,” Whitley County coach Michael Branham said. “Five minutes into the second half Levi Huddleston drew a PK and Rizzo Cima converted it for a 1-0 lead. We managed to hold off Rowan County for about the next 18 minutes until we made a defensive error and gave up a goal. From there, we battled it out again, but gave up a goal on a free kick that was put in the box from deep.

“We pressured hard for the last 10 minutes, but unfortunately couldn’t manage to put one in the back of the net,” he added. “I’m beyond proud of the fight the boys showed tonight and the way we were able to battle with a solid Rowan county team for 80 minutes. Forward, Rizzo Cima and goalkeeper Clyde Johnson earned all tournament honors.”
