Colonels drop 6-2 road decision to Southwestern

SOMERSET — Whitley County fell to 6-3-1 on the season after suffering a 6-2 road loss to Southwestern on Thursday.

The Warriors capitalized early, converting on two penalty kicks to jump out in front. The Colonels battled back late in the first half when Bryson Mahan scored off a long ball from Hydro Cunnagin to cut into the deficit.

In the second half, Whitley County turned to its younger players for valuable varsity minutes, while Cunnagin added a goal of his own by burying a penalty kick.

Despite the loss, Whitley County coach Michael Branham pointed to both the early miscues and the opportunity to build depth.

“We gave up two uncharacteristic PKs to start the game and dug a hole for ourselves,” he said. “Bryson Mahan scored off a long ball from Hydro Cunnagin late in the first half. We pulled our varsity guys to preserve them for Saturday and let our younger guys get some varsity time. Hydro Cunnagin buried a PK in the second half for our second goal.”

The Colonels will look to bounce back Friday when they host Barbourville at 6 p.m.
