Lady Colonels stay perfect with sweep of Rockcastle County

MOUNT VERNON — David Halcomb’s Whitley County Lady Colonels remained unbeaten on the season, improving to 7-0 with a road victory over Rockcastle County on Thursday.

Whitley County held off the Lady Rockets in a tight opening set, 26-24, before finding their rhythm in a 25-15 win in the second. The Lady Colonels carried that momentum into the third set, pulling away for a 25-14 decision to complete the sweep.

Halcomb praised his team’s resilience and unity while also crediting Rockcastle County’s strong performance.

“Really good three-set win for our team,” he said. “I was really impressed with Rockcastle County’s defense. They had a really good crowd which made it a little bit difficult for us. Our girls really had to fight hard the first set and I was proud with how they handled coming from behind. We really started to hit our stride in the second set and that carried over into the third set.

“Our girls continued to give great effort and show a tremendous amount of unity on the floor,” Halcomb added. “We will have a good day of practice tomorrow in preparation for Saturday’s Kentucky 2A, Section 7 championships.”
