IRVINE — Brooks Cawood’s South Laurel Cardinals started the 2025 campaign on the right foot by delivering a 3-0 shutout to homestanding Estill County on Tuesday.
Three different Cardinal players scored in the three-goal victory — Blake Robinson, Ryan Martinez and Kelan Littlejohn while Robinson also had an assist.
“Overall, I was very pleased with how we moved the ball tonight,” Cawood said. “Possession all over the field was much better than I’ve seen this n the preseason. We have a young g team but Caleb Whicker made some excellent saves tonight.
There are some key pieces we are still working on. Our shooting was just not where we needed it.
“Estill County came out and challenged every ball,” he added. “There defenders were able to close in quickly and hinder good looks in and around the box. We have another athletic team on Thursday when we travel to Hazard.”
