Corbin’s boys’ tennis team posts 1-1 mark during state tournament play

LEXINGTON — Corbin’s boys’ tennis team’s run in the KHSAA Tennis Team Tournament came to an end during quarterfinal action after falling to Dunbar, 3-0.

The Redhounds won their opening round match, defeating Lawrence County, 3-1, as Nate Hill, John Ball, and Connor Middleton each won their respective match.

“It was a great year for our team making the round of eight for the second year in a row,” Corbin coach Jeff Hill said. “Everyone played extremely hard today. I am very proud of the team.

“Connor Middleton fought through an ankle injury to win against Lawrence County and narrowly lost the second match in a third set tiebreaker against Dunbar,” he added. “His grit and determination were an inspiration to the team. John Ball beat the number 2 player for Lawrence County. His match against Dunbar was unfinished as the match was already decided. John was undefeated in post season play at the two singles spot.

“Nate hill beat the number one player from Lawrence County, Chase Kendrick. Kendrick is the 15th Region singles champion and a great player,” Hill continued. “Nate’s match against Dunbar was also unfinished, he was actually in a first set tiebreaker against Evan Fomby, the 11th region champion. Nate was undefeated at the one singles spot during the post season team competition. Myles Bonzo, Eli Skeen, JP Carmichael, and Ethan Bonham rounded out our team today. I was proud of how each performed against some of the best players in the state. Ethan and JP did not get to finish their match against Lawrence County’s best doubles team, which also won their region. These four kids have bright futures with our program.”
