State Tourney Action: Corbin’s Lopez cruises in singles action while Jones/Morton roll during doubles play

LEXINGTON — So far, so good for Corbin’s singles player Isabella Lopez and doubles players Lindsay Jones and Katie Morton.

Lopez entered the KHSAA Girls’ Singles State Tournament as a No. 2 seed while Jones and Morton also earned a No. 2 seed in the doubles state tourney.

Lopez won her match 6-0, 6-0 over Maggie Schommer from Danville while Morton/Jones won 6-0, 6-0 over Sarah Combs/Kate Gasser from Harrison County

“This has been such a big year for Corbin Girls Tennis coming off a team state runner-up finish last year,” Corbin coach Chris Jones said. “We’ve been building on such a strong legacy, but this year we’ve really taken it to the next level. The girls have never had anyone higher than a three seed and now this year we have eighth grader Isabella Lopez as the two seed in singles and seniors Katie Morton and Lindsay Jones as the two seed in doubles.

“I’m so proud of Bella,” he added. “She works so hard year round and to be ranked second in the state among high schoolers is such a phenomenal accomplishment for someone that just finished up middle school. Bella has a huge game and we can’t wait to see how well this tournament goes.

“Lindsay and Katie have been playing together for so long,” Jones continued. “It’s a great example of how consistent hard work over the course of many years has finally paid off with a two seed in the state tournament. We’re so excited for our seniors to make a deep run into this tournament as they cap off very successful tennis career at Corbin High School.”

Olivia McArthur also participated in the KHSAA Girls’ Singles Tournament, falling 2-6, 3-6 to Payton Venters of Pulaski County.
