Colonels lock up third consecutive trip to regional title game 

PINEVILLE — Whitley County punched its third straight trip to the 13th Region Tournament’s championship game by defeating Harlan, 11-4, during Tuesday’s semifinal action.

The Colonels (27-6) jumped out to a 5-0 lead only to see the Green Dragons (17-13) fight back to cut their deficit to 5-4 in the bottom of the second.

Whitley County added a run in the top of the third before putting the game away with two runs in the fifth inning and three runs in the sixth inning.

“Proud of our guys,” Whitley County coach Jeremy Shope said. “We were able to score some runs to help our young pitchers out. We were able to run 4 different young arms out there tonight. We were able to put some offensive pressure by using the bunt game and running the bases. It is something that we work on every day. We are honored to get to play for another region championship tomorrow night. Go Colonels.”

Caden Mountjoy connected with a three-run home run in the win while finishing the game with four RBI and a run scored. Kip Allen and Spencer Bargo both had a hit and an RBI apiece while Ty Petrey went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Dee Parker and EJ Allen both finished with a hit and two runs scored while Ronald Osborne collected a hit and scored once. Spencer Bargo had a hit and an RBI.

Eli Powers started the game, lasting three innings while allowing three hits and two earned runs. He struck out four batters. Trey Walton got the win, pitching two scoreless innings while allowing a hit. Clint Partin and Chris Cureton combined to throw two scoreless innings to cap off the win.
