PINEVILLE — Whitley County eighth grader Kip Allen turned in one of his best pitching efforts of the season when coach Jeremy Shope needed him most.
Allen silenced Clay County’s bats, limiting the Tigers (15-13) to only two hits while becoming only the third pitcher this season to shutout them out. He finished with six strikeouts while throwing only 73 pitches, as Whitley County won 1-0.
“Always good to win in postseason games,” Shope said. “Heck of an outing by Kip and our defense — 73 pitch, complete game is phenomenal. Clay County matched us with their guy on the mound and their defense. We’re fortunate to be playing again tomorrow. Tomorrow is a new day. Go Colonels.”
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Dee Parker connected with a run-scoring hit. He finished the game with two hits and an RBI for the Colonels (26-6). Allen also had two hits in the win while EJ Allen and Ty Petrey finished with a hit apiece.
Clay County pitcher Talan Marcum turned in a stellar pitching effort as well. He went six innings, allowing seven hits and one earned run.
Ethan Jackson and Connor Gilbert had the Tigers’ lone hits.
