Twenty-Four and Counting: Corbin boys’ tennis team captures 14th straight regional crown

HARLAN — The more things change, the more things stay the same.
Case in point — the Corbin boys’ tennis team capturing their 24th consecutive regional championship.
The Redhounds defeated Whitley County, 4-1, in semifinal action Saturday before handing North Laurel a 4-1 loss on Sunday in the title game.
“We beat North Laurel 4-1 with singles wins from Nate Hill, John Ball and Connor Middleton. The doubles team of Ethan Bonham and JP Carmichael were also victorious,” Corbin coach Jeff Hill said. “On Saturday, we defeated Whitley County in the Semifinals 4-1. We won all three singles matches with wins from Nate Hill, John Ball, and Connor Middleton. Ethan Bonham and JP Carmichael won their doubles Match. In the Quarterfinals we beat Clay County 5-0. In the Clay County match, Myles Bonzo and Matthew Mills provided a big doubles win.
“I am very proud of our team this year,” he added. “We only had four returning players from last season. We had six new players that contributed throughout the year. Nate, John, Connor and JP really carried the team this year and allowed the new players to develop.

Our seventh grader, Ethan Bonham, improved greatly during the year and contributed to three big wins during team region. JP and Ethan beat three solid teams this week to help seal the Championship.

“John Ball, Nate Hill and Connor Middleton each were undefeated in singles matches during the team region,” Hill continued. “They were three of the best players in the region this year and delivered in the postseason. We are looking forward to competing in the state team competition the first week of June.”
