HARLAN — The dominance continues.
Corbin’s girls’ tennis team captured its 16th straight 13th Region title by defeating Clay County, 4-0.
The Lady Redhounds won all three singles matches, and a doubles match while other the doubles match was stopped once Corbin wrapped up the win.
The team competition starts on all five courts (three singles and two doubles) at the same time and as soon as a team wins three courts, the other courts stop play and that team advances to the next round.
The Lady Redhounds’ Isabella Lopez (6-0, 6-0), Lindsay Jones (6-1, 5-2) and Katie Morton (6-0, 6-0) each won their singles matches while the doubles team of Olivia McArthur and Tory Canady won 6-1, 6-0. Mollie Coleman and Emma Faulkner (6-4, 1-0) were leading their matches when play was stopped.
Corbin rolled in semifinal action, securing a 3-0 victory before both doubles matches were finished.
Lopez, Jones and Morton each won their respective singles matches by the identical scores of 6-0, 6-0. McArthur and Canady were leading their doubles match, 6-1, 2-9 while Coleman and Faulkner were trailing in their respective match, 0-6, 2-0.
Corbin will now represent the 13th Region in the team state competition at the University of Kentucky on Monday, June 2.
“I couldn’t be prouder of this group of girls,” Corbin coach Chris Jones said. “They all played great in back to back matches. They work so hard on the court year around, and in the classroom — they’re just a great group of girls.
“It’s definitely bittersweet to have my youngest daughter (Lindsay) along with Katie and Olivia graduating from the program,” he added. “Those three deserve a lot of credit and recognition for being foundational to the success of our program for many years now. We are very pleased to be able to continue the storied tradition of Corbin Tennis by winning the girls team title for the 16th consecutive year. None of this would have been possible without my wife, assistant coach and team Mom, Tara Jones, and all the great parents we’ve had this year and for many years past.”
