LONDON — After recording three big wins against Corbin (twice), and North Laurel last week, South Laurel continued its red-hot play with a 15-3 win over No. 3 Jackson County.
The Cardinals (18-6) entered the contest as the region’s No. 2 ranked team, and backed it up by turning in solid efforts at the plate, on the mound, and defensively.
Austin Byrd turned in a two-hit, three-RBI, and three runs scored effort while Waylon Hensley followed with two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored. Vince Sizemore had two hits, and an RBI while RJ Noble finished with two hits, an RBI, and two runs scored. Keaton Smith finished with a hit, an RBI, and two runs scored while Will Alsip had a hit, an RBI, and a run scored. Bryson Turner collected a hit and scored twice while Jack Vaughn drove in two runs and scored once. Keaton Creech drove in a run.
“I was proud of our boys,” South Laurel coach Trey Smith said. “Jackson County has a good team. We were really opportunistic at the plate, and it paid off. We’ve been leaning on our defense and pitching all year. When you can add the offense we had tonight, it’s a good game to be a part of.
“I told the boys we want to make sure to stay locked in every inning and every game,” he added. “We don’t want to get comfortable. We’ve got a tough challenge in the postseason against a very good Corbin team.”
Creech recorded the win, tossing 3.1 innings while allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out four batters. Alsip pitched the final 1.2 innings, allowing only three hits and no earned runs. He struck out two batters.
Cayden Farmer led the Generals (18-7) with two hits while Ashton Clemons, Michael Sparks, and Braxton Clemons each finished with a hit and an RBI apiece.
