WILLIAMSBURG — Jeremy Shope’s Whitley County Colonels’ honored former Colonel Matt Strickland, who passed this past week, capping the game off with a 15-0 win over Harlan County on Thursday.
“It was an emotional day. We honored one of our own today,” Shope said. “We lost a former Colonel this week and we wanted to be there for the family. We will continue to pray for comfort. We will play for Matt because he was one of our biggest fans. “Proud of our team for understanding that today was going to be an emotional day and they had a game that was bigger than a game,” he added. “They handled it with maturity. Number 9 will be in our hearts. Go Colonels.”
Whitley County (20-4) wasted no time jumping on the Black Bears, pushing seven runs across home plate in the first inning while adding eight more runs in the third inning to secure the win.
Kip Allen turned in a perfect 2-for-2 effort at the plate with three RBI, and two runs scored while Ty Petrey had two hits, two RBI, and two runs scored. Eli Powers had two hits, and scored twice while Dee Parker delivered two hits, an RBI, and two runs scored. Ronald Osborne finished with two hits, an RBI, and a run scored while Henry Bowling had a hit, two RBI, and two runs scored. Jason Nunley, and EJ Allen both finished with a hit, an RBI, and two runs scored.
Powers got the win, allowing no earned runs and only two hits. He struck out four batters.
