LONDON — Chris Edwards’ North Laurel Lady Jaguars recorded a regular season sweep over crosstown rival South Laurel on Thursday with a 7-3 victory.
The Lady Jaguars (14-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead before briefly falling behind 3-2 in the top of the fifth inning. North Laurel scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth while adding three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the win.
“Really good game by both teams,” Edwards said. “Finally got some good weather, too. We had several hits but we couldn’t string them together again tonight.
“We had girls on base and hit into three line drive/force out double plays,” he added. “All three of those were hit very well. A lot of credit tonight to Likins and her defense. She threw very well, kept us off balance and her defense made some great plays.”
Saige McClure led the way at the plate for North Laurel, going 3-for-4 with two RBI while Ellie Adams went 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI, and one run scored. Katie Sams continued to thrive at the lead-off spot, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, and two runs scored. Emma Carl, Bella Sizemore, Morgan Edwards, and Bella Finley each delivered a hit apiece.
“Offensively, multiple hits from Katie Sams, Ellie Adams and Saige McClure,” Edwards said. “Eleven hits total, so we seen it pretty well.”
Carl picked up the win in the circle, pitching all seven innings while allowing seven hits and three runs. She struck out five batters.
“Pitching wise, Emma was good again,” Edwards said. “We had one inning when they scored some runs but otherwise she held them at bay. In the field we were perfect tonight. If we continue to pitch well and play good defense, we will be OK.”
Morgan Jackson and Ryleigh Bretz led South Laurel (10-4) with two hits and an RBI apiece while Kenzie Williams also added a run-scoring hit. Addison Baker, and Bailey Frazier both finished with a hit apiece.
Audrey Likins took the loss, allowing 11 hits, and four earned runs while striking out a batter.
“No game tomorrow, so we will practice and head to Frankfort for the Capital City Classic,” Edwards said. “A top 15 game with Lafayette Saturday morning and then Cooper that evening. Hopefully we will go up there and play well. Go Jags.”
