WILLIAMSBURG — It took 12 innings, but in the end, a win is a win, and Jeremy Shope’s Whitley County Colonels advanced to the Class 2A, Section 7 title game by defeating Bell County, 4-3.
The game turned out to be a pitcher’s duel with the two teams combining to use seven pitchers.
The Colonels were limited to four hits while the Bobcats had six.
Whitley County loaded the bases in the bottom of the 12th, and Jason Nunley received a walk which scored EJ allen to give the Colonels the win.
Both teams scored a run apiece in the first inning while Bell County took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth.
The Colonels answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 edge only to see the Bobcats tie the game at three apiece in the top of the seventh.
Nunley led Whitley County with a hit, two RBI, and a run scored while Henry Bowling finished with a hit, an RBI, and a run scored. EJ Allen had a hit and scored twice.
EJ Allen started the game, lasting 5.2 innings while allowing two hits, and one earned run. Trey Walton pitched 3.1 innings, striking out four batters while allowing two hits and one earned run. Kip Allen got the win, tossing three innings while allowing two hits and no runs. He finished with five strikeouts.
Blake Burnett led Bell County (1-1) with three hits while Cooper Brock finished with a hit and a run scored. Joseph Brigmon finished with a hit and an RBI while Hunter Fuson also drove in a run.
