Emmie Rice becomes South Laurel’s career leader in home runs after belting No. 25 in 7-2 win over Harlan County

HARLAN — The South Laurel High School Fastpitch program has a new career home run leader after sophomore Emmie Rice connected with her 25th career home run, surpassing former Lady Cardinal Emily Gaines’ total of 24, during Friday’s 7-2 win over Harlan County.

Rice finished with a home run, three RBI and one run scored as South Laurel’s lead improved to 3-0.

“That was a hard fought win against a much-improved Harlan County team,” South Laurel coach Carly Mink said. “Audrey Likins gave us six strong innings and Kenzie was able to close it out for us.

“Congratulations to Emmie Rice for breaking a record that has stood since 2010 and held by Kentucky Miss Softball Emily Gaines,” she added. “Very impressive and says a lot about her ability to be able to achieve this as a sophomore. We are very proud of her. Good team win tonight.”

Bailey Frazier finished with two hits and a run scored while Morgan Jackson, Kenzie Williams, Ryleigh Bretz, and Skye Lawson each delivered run-scoring hits in the win.

Audrey Likins tossed six innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs while striking out two batters. Williams pitched a scoreless and hitless inning while striking out three batters.
