Martin scores game-high 22 points to help lead Barbourville past Lynn Camp

BARBOURVILLE — Amy Shields’ Barbourville Lady Tigers improved to 8-17 while picking up their second win over Lynn Camp, defeating the Lady Wildcats, 65-40.

Led by Marleigh Martin’s 22-point scoring effort, Barbourville took an 18-10 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

Bre Engle added 18 points while Layla Brock finished with 10 points in the win.

“After a slow start our defense picked up, we rebounded and started looking to pass to the open person, which led to scoring,” Shields said. “Good teamwork down the stretch. When we had people in foul trouble, others stepped up to fill the needed role.

“Lynn Camp continued to play hard and never gave up,” she added. “They really challenged us throughout the game.”

Lauren Partin led Lynn Camp with 12 points while Jayden Petrey added nine points.

“The girls played really hard tonight,” Lynn Camp coach James Prewitt said. “It was a six-point game in the middle of the third, but we had a few mental breakdowns on defense. We really played much better at times, but then we made the same mistakes we have been making.

“Coach Shields does a great job coaching her team,” he added. “They play really well together and are defensive minded. We have a couple of days and then we play again Friday and Saturday. We will get our minds right and go back to work before then.”
