Seeing Is Believing: Tod Windlan’s Lady Cardinals blaze a trail with 14th straight victory

ALEXANDRIA — If you weren’t already a believer in Tod Windlan’s South Laurel Lady Cardinals, you likely are now.

The Lady Cardinals extended their winning streak to 14 games, with recent impressive victories over Whitley County, Corbin, and North Laurel.

The streak continued with a 54-46 win against Campbell County on Saturday, bringing South Laurel’s record to 19-4.

As a result of their success, the Lady Cardinals are set to claim the No. 1 spot in the 13th Region rankings on Sunday.

“Huge win on the road and played a very good Campbell County team,” Windlan said. “So proud of my players, coaches and South community. After an emotional win Thursday, was worried about our energy level but it was great again.”

South Laurel’s defensive play was center stage once again as the Lady Cardinals led 10-7 at the end of the first quarter, and 22-18 at halftime.

Windlan’s squad took a 39-35 lead into the fourth quarter before pulling away.

Skeeter Mabe scored eight of her 18 points in the final eight minutes while Jamie Buenaventura added seven of her 18 points during the period. She also finished with 10 rebounds. Maci Messer also scored in double figures, finishing with 12 points.

“Thought we got off to a good start and maintained that play throughout the game,” Windlan said. “We held their top two scorers to a total of eight points and they were averaging a combined 26.

“Skeeter Mabe was outstanding today, 18 points, 8-of-8 from the free throw-line while handling the ball and making great decisions,” he added. “Jamie Buenaventura was a warrior, 18 points, 10 rebounds and guarding the leading scorer for a large portion of the game. Maci Messer had 12 points, Aubrey Bundy hit a big 3 for her only points but was all over the place getting six rebounds and playing scrappy tough defense. Callie Jones had only two points but had five assists. Ryleigh Bretz, Kenna Andes and Shelby Smith provided us really good minutes off the bench.

The Lady Cardinals are in action Tuesday at home versus Pineville. This is a special group of players. Go Cards and Southside proud.”
