District Title at Stake as Unbeaten Rockcastle County Hosts Knox Central in Rivalry Showdown

BARBOURVILLE — Something will have to give Friday when Knox Central travels to Rockcastle County for a showdown that will determine the district championship.
The Panthers (6-2) will attempt to hand the Rockets (8-0) their first loss of the season while Rockcastle County looks to preserve its perfect record, capture the district crown and extend its recent dominance in a rivalry that has featured several momentum shifts over the years.
The Rockets enter the contest holding a 23-15 advantage series between the two teams, including victories in each of the past three meetings. Rockcastle County claimed last season’s matchup by a convincing 32-6 margin.
Before the Rockets’ current three-game winning streak, however, Knox Central had won 10 of the previous 11 meetings between the programs.
The Panthers are 7-11 all-time on the road against Rockcastle County, making Friday’s championship matchup an opportunity to reverse both recent history and their fortunes in Mount Vernon.
Both teams possess explosive offenses, but their contrasting styles and talented defensive units could make this one of the region’s most intriguing matchups of the regular season.
Rockcastle County’s unbeaten start has been fueled by a powerful rushing attack that has accumulated 1,880 yards through six games with reported individual statistics, averaging an impressive 313.3 rushing yards per contest and 9.5 yards per carry.
Senior running back Xavier Leger has been at the forefront of that production, rushing for 671 yards on just 68 carries. Leger is averaging 9.9 yards per attempt and 111.8 rushing yards per game, establishing himself as a consistent big-play threat.
Junior Jacob Camel has provided another explosive option out of the backfield, totaling 399 yards on 34 carries while averaging an eye-catching 11.7 yards per attempt.
Senior Hunter Pingleton has added 306 yards on 32 attempts, averaging 9.6 yards per carry, while junior Brayden Thacker has contributed 217 yards on 31 carries.
Senior Blake Mullins has also made the most of his opportunities, rushing for 92 yards on just three attempts.
The Rockets’ depth in the backfield presents a considerable challenge for opposing defenses, with multiple players capable of producing substantial gains whenever they touch the football.
Although Rockcastle County’s offense is built around its rushing attack, junior quarterback Camden Larkey has provided balance through the passing game.
Larkey has completed 37 of 61 attempts for 640 yards and six touchdowns while adding 132 rushing yards on 18 carries.
Mullins leads the receiving corps with 11 receptions for 226 yards, while Leger has contributed eight catches for 192 yards and three touchdowns.
Thacker has added 10 receptions for 163 yards and two scores, giving the Rockets several options when they elect to attack through the air.
Rockcastle County has accumulated 2,520 yards of total offense through its six games with reported offensive statistics, underscoring the production that has helped the Rockets remain unbeaten.
Knox Central will counter with an offense that has produced 2,678 yards through seven games with reported statistics.
The Panthers have totaled 1,610 rushing yards and 1,068 passing yards, scoring 302 points while allowing just 149 during that span.
Senior running back Brayden Sizemore has been the centerpiece of Knox Central’s ground attack, rushing for 913 yards on 81 carries. Sizemore is averaging 11.3 yards per attempt and 130.4 yards per game.
His production sets up an individual matchup with Leger, as both teams enter Friday featuring explosive running backs capable of changing the course of a game with a single carry.
Sophomore quarterback Eli Carey has also developed into a dangerous offensive weapon for the Panthers.
Carey has completed 62 of 103 passes for 1,068 yards and 13 touchdowns while contributing another 187 yards on the ground.
Sophomore Spencer Prichard has provided Knox Central with versatility, rushing for 277 yards on 33 attempts while leading the Panthers with 23 receptions for 362 yards and five touchdowns.
Junior Coleman Spencer has added 14 catches for 296 yards and two scores, while junior Luke Olmstead has totaled 227 receiving yards and five touchdowns on just nine receptions.
Senior Nathan Dunn has also contributed 13 receptions for 167 yards and a touchdown.
With both offenses featuring multiple big-play threats, Friday’s outcome could hinge on which defense can establish itself at the line of scrimmage and limit explosive plays.
Rockcastle County’s defense has been productive throughout its unbeaten campaign, recording 18 sacks and 42 tackles for loss through six games with reported individual defensive statistics.
Senior Hunter Pingleton has been one of the Rockets’ defensive leaders, totaling 21 solo tackles, 22 assists, one sack and four tackles for loss.
Senior Blake Mullins has recorded 17 solo tackles, 15 assists, three sacks and seven tackles for loss, while senior Cameron Smith has contributed four sacks and four tackles for loss.
Junior Levi Clemmons has added 10 solo tackles, seven assists, two sacks and five tackles for loss.
Sophomore James Hughes has also made an impact with six tackles for loss and one sack while senior Xavier Leger has contributed 13 solo tackles, four assists and three tackles for loss.
Junior Jacob Camel has added 11 solo stops, five assists, one sack and four tackles for loss.
The Rockets’ ability to generate pressure and disrupt opposing offenses will be especially important against a Knox Central team that has demonstrated the ability to produce explosive gains through both its passing and rushing attacks.
The Panthers possess an equally disruptive defensive unit.
Knox Central has recorded 31 sacks and 28 tackles for loss through seven games with reported statistics, led by sophomore Kobe Reed, who has registered 11 sacks and six tackles for loss.
Junior Jathan Collins has contributed six sacks and four tackles for loss, while sophomore Owen Jones has added six sacks and three tackles for loss.
Senior Donavan Smith has been a consistent presence for the Panthers, recording 26 solo tackles, 63 assists and two sacks.
Junior Gavin Jordan has added 19 solo tackles, 32 assists and one sack, while senior Landen Daughtry has contributed 24 solo stops and 31 assists.
The battle between Rockcastle County’s productive rushing attack and Knox Central’s aggressive defensive front could prove to be one of the deciding factors in the contest.
Likewise, the Rockets will be tasked with containing Sizemore and limiting Carey’s opportunities to connect with Prichard, Spencer and Olmstead downfield.
For Knox Central, a victory would accomplish several significant objectives. The Panthers would claim the district championship, end Rockcastle County’s unbeaten season and snap their three-game losing streak against the Rockets.
Rockcastle County, meanwhile, has an opportunity to strengthen what has already been an impressive season by securing the district title, improving to 9-0 and extending its winning streak over Knox Central to four consecutive meetings.
The matchup also features two teams with remarkably similar offensive production despite their contrasting approaches.
Rockcastle County’s ground game averages 313.3 yards per contest in its reported games, while Knox Central averages 230 rushing yards and possesses a more established passing attack behind Carey.
Leger and Sizemore headline two talented backfields, while both defensive units have demonstrated the ability to create negative plays and put opposing offenses in difficult situations.
The Rockets have the perfect record, recent rivalry success and home-field advantage.
The Panthers have the opportunity to change the direction of the series and capture the district championship on their rival’s home field.
