Corbin strikes early, extends Whitley County streak to 11 with 42-0 shutout

WILLIAMSBURG — Corbin wasted little time taking control Friday night, scoring four touchdowns in the opening quarter on its way to a 42-0 victory over Whitley County.
The Redhounds improved to 6-2, while the Colonels fell to 0-8. Corbin also extended its winning streak against Whitley County to 11 consecutive games since the series resumed in 2015.
“Good win,” Corbin coach Luke Salmons said. “The kids played hard and played clean football. Our starters played two quarters, and it was a quick game. We stayed healthy, and I feel like we’re improving in all three phases of the game. Love this team.”
Quarterback Mason Salmons opened the scoring by connecting with Tayton Cox on a 19-yard touchdown pass with 10:04 remaining in the first quarter.
Corbin doubled its advantage less than four minutes later when Jake Salmons scored on a 14-yard run, making it 14-0.
Trey Person then broke loose for a 44-yard touchdown run with 3:41 remaining, and Mason Salmons followed with a 20-yard touchdown run at the 2:11 mark to give the Redhounds a commanding 28-0 advantage after one quarter.
Person struck again just 26 seconds into the second quarter, racing 48 yards for his second touchdown of the night and extending Corbin’s lead to 35-0.
Clay Akins finished the scoring with an eight-yard touchdown run with 3:20 remaining before halftime, sending the Redhounds into the break ahead 42-0.
Neither team scored in the second half as Corbin’s defense completed the shutout.
Person finished with touchdown runs of 44 and 48 yards while Mason Salmons accounted for one touchdown through the air and another on the ground as the Redhounds continued their dominance in the series.
