WILLIAMSBURG — Whitley County added another milestone to its season Thursday night, defeating Adair County 25-12, 21-25, 25-19, 30-28 to earn its 30th victory of the year.
The Lady Colonels improved to 30-4 after holding off a strong challenge from Adair County.
“Wow, just a phenomenal volleyball match from two very good teams,” Whitley County coach David Halcomb said. “This ranks right up there as one of our biggest wins of the season. I have a lot of respect for Adair County and they are very well-coached. I believe they were on a 17 -game winning streak and some polls have them ranked in top 20 in the state. We knew coming in that it would be a battle.
“I’m just so very proud of our girls and the determination they showed tonight,” he added. “We really needed this match as we discovered some things we’ve got to work on moving forward. Great job by our girls. We fought hard to get our 30th win of the season. Now we will get ready for our final regular season match and our Senior Day on Saturday against Pulaski County.”
Whitley County came out firing in the opening set, building a 12-5 lead and never looking back on the way to a 25-12 victory.
Adair County responded in the second set, grabbing an early advantage and holding off the Lady Colonels for a 25-21 win to even the match at one set apiece.
Whitley County regained control in the third, taking the set 25-19 to move within one win of closing out the match.
The fourth set turned into the most competitive of the night. Neither team could create much separation late, forcing the set beyond 25 points before Whitley County finally finished off a 30-28 victory.
