HAZARD — Whitley County’s defense kept the Colonels within striking distance throughout the first half Friday night, but turnovers and offensive struggles eventually allowed Hazard to pull away for a 31-0 victory.
The Colonels limited Hazard to just three points during the opening two quarters despite their defense spending much of the half on the field.
Whitley County went into halftime trailing only 3-0, but Hazard took control after the break and scored 28 unanswered points to put the game away.
The Colonels were able to put together a couple of promising offensive drives but couldn’t turn those opportunities into points. Turnovers also proved costly against a Hazard team that took advantage in the second half.
The loss dropped Whitley County to 0-2, but coach Matt Rhymer saw improvement from his team after its season-opening loss.
“Thought our team got better from week one to week two,” Rhymer said. “The score was 3-0 at the half, and our defense was on the field a lot of snaps. I was really proud of our defense and thought they gave us a chance.
“Offensively, we had a couple good drives but turned the ball over too many times to have a chance against a good team,” he added. “We have to execute better and find a way to score some points. Hazard is a solid, well-coached team and deserves credit.”
