LONDON — Cam Anderson scored both goals as North Laurel picked up a key district victory with a 2-0 shutout of crosstown rival South Laurel.
The Jaguars controlled possession at different points during the opening half but had trouble converting opportunities in the final third before Anderson broke through.
Anderson connected on a loose ball inside the box to put North Laurel ahead 1-0, an advantage the Jaguars carried into halftime.
North Laurel added some insurance in the second half when Zach Jacobs delivered a corner kick that Anderson headed into the back of the net for his second goal of the match.
The Jaguars’ defense made the two-goal advantage stand, keeping the Cardinals off the scoreboard to secure North Laurel’s opening district victory.
“Crosstown rivalry games are always tough,” North Laurel coach David Broyles said. “I thought we came out playing well at the beginning, but let the rivalry part of the game get to us a bit. We connected passes and had good possession at times, but we had a disconnect in the final third and wasted some good opportunities. We were able to finally get on the scoreboard when Cam Anderson connected on a loose ball in the box to give us a 1-0 lead at the half.
“Second half, I felt we played better, but still weren’t able to connect on some crucial passes in the final third,”’he added. “We got our second goal off a Zach Jacobs corner that Cam Anderson headed into the back of the net. We’d go back and forth from there, and that’s how it ended. At the end of the day, we got our opening district win, but we have a lot to work on as it doesn’t get easier next week at Whitley and then Corbin at home.”
