Powenski powers Knox Central past Pulaski County, Panthers win ninth straight

BARBOURVILLE — Knox Central continues to roll.

Behind another big night at the plate from Matthew Powenski, the Panthers stretched their winning streak to nine games with a 9-5 victory over Pulaski County on Monday.

Powenski provided the biggest swing of the night, blasting his second home run of the season while driving in four runs. The freshman now sits at 23 RBI on the year, continuing to anchor a Knox Central offense that has been red-hot during its current win streak.

“Great team win tonight,” Knox Central coach Mike Bright said. “We got 3.1 of quality innings out of our starter Russell Mills. It was one of those nights the everyone did something to contribute to the win. Big hits when we needed them. We were able to play a little small ball and did a good job on the base paths as well. Proud of the way our team is competing.”

The Panthers (16-6) wasted no time grabbing control, scoring four runs in the first inning and never trailing. Knox Central added runs in the second and fourth innings before adding some cushion with a three-run fifth inning.

Knox Central finished with 12 hits, led by Jonathan Hobbs, who went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Trevor Smith added two hits and an RBI while Brady Engle contributed an RBI and scored twice. Hayden Melton also chipped in with a hit and a run scored while Tate Marcum delivered a run-scoring hit.

On the mound, the Panthers pieced together the win with a three-man effort. Russell Mills earned the victory while Smith closed things out with two scoreless innings.
