OWENSBORO — Jeremy Shope’s Whitley County Colonels moved one step closer in capturing the Kentucky 2A State Championship thanks to an easy 10-1 win over Murray during Friday’s first round action.
“Great win for our team tonight,” Shope said. “We traveled all day and then came out and played a really good baseball game. We beat a pitcher that was 4-0 with 0.55 ERA. Cooper Parman was really good for us tonight. We needed him to give us some really good innings and he delivered. We were able to turn several double plays.
“We play again tomorrow in the semifinal of the 2A State Tournament,” he added. “That’s a big deal. So proud of our guys. We’re going to be ready to go compete again tomorrow. Go Colonels.”
Cooper Parman delivered at the plate and the mound, tossing 5.1 innings, allowing only one hit and finishing with four strikeouts. He also had a hit and two RBI.
EJ Allen did damage at the lead-off spot, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored while Luke Hillard finished with two hits.
Caleb Cureton and Clint Partin pitched in relief combing to limit Murray to two hits while striking out two.
The Colonels are scheduled to be back in action Saturday against Glasgow.
