PINEVILLE — Whitley County jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning before watching Clay County score six unanswered runs in the final three innings, as the Lady Colonels fell, 6-4, during Tuesday’s Class 2A, Section 7 Tournament.
Ella Samples came through with a perfect 3-for-3 effort at the plate while driving in two runs for Clay County (3-1) while Alivia Hoskins drove in two runs in the win. Madison Sizemore and Sydney Stewart also drove in a run apiece for the Lady Tigers.
Katelyn Shepherd hit a two-run homer for the Lady Colonels (1-2) while Megan McKiddy had a hit and drove in two runs.
“Tough loss for us, after leading for most of the game,” Whitley County coach David Halcomb said. “I thought we played better than our last time out, especially at the plate. We had much better at bats and had runners on base every inning but one I believe — just needed some timely hits that we didn’t get. “We were able to put the ball in play more consistently, which is a positive for us,” he added. “I told our girls to be disappointed that we lost, but not to be down, there is a difference. We have a good group of girls. I really like our team and we will continue to improve.”
