CORBIN — The Whitley County Colonels notched their first trip to the 13th Region Boys’ Basketball season for the first time since 2011.
Tootie Mahan scored all 12 of his points in the first quarter, leading the Colonels to a 71-30 win over Williamsburg during Monday’s semifinal action of the 50th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament.
Whitley County (19-10) is also one win away from capturing its first 50th District title in 45 years.
“Great win for our program,” Whitley County coach Eric Swords said. “We have been working at this for the last four years. We have had 10 seniors the last three years, so every one of them deserves credit. We remember all the smirks, grins and being mocked when we came up with motto ‘Wakethegiant’ four years ago but our kids have done that and we need all of Colonel Nation at Corbin on Friday to try and bring home our first district title in 45 years.”
Shamal Allen (11 points), Henry Bowling (10 points), and Eli Powers (10 points) each scored in double figures for the Colonels while Layne Jeffries and Trenton Cornett scored 11 points apiece for Williamsburg (1-27).
