No. 12 Lady Cardinals knock off second straight Top 10 team

LONDON — No. 12 South Laurel captured another win against a Top 10 team in consecutive games on Friday, defeating No. 10 Campbell County, 64-52.

The Lady Cardinals will enter next week’s 50th District Tournament with a 22-6 record.

“So proud of our team,” Lady Cardinals coach Tod Windlan said. “The grit and competitiveness they show tonight was outstanding. This makes the second game in a row, Ashland Blazer on Saturday, and Campbell County tonight, that we played two top 10 teams well for 32 minutes.

“Skeeter Mabe was sensational in the first half with 18 points,” he added. “She was aggressive and just took over the game. 

Ryleigh Bretz was strong on the boards and scored six points in the first half. We came out in the second half and Maci Messer took over the game scoring 15 of her 19 points. “Aubrey Bundy had all eight of her points in the second half including two big 3-pointers,” Windlan continued. “Overall, it was a great win on Aubrey’s senior night playing a great team.Skeeter Mabe led us with 20, played limited minutes in second half with foul trouble. Maci Messer 19, Ryleigh Bretz and Aubrey Bundy had eight, Callie Jones had six, and Kenzie Fannin came off the bench to score three points. Lady Cards play Monday at 6 p.m. at Corbin vs. Williamsburg in the 50th District to start tournament play.
