No. 12 Lady Cardinals remain unbeaten in 50th District play

LONDON — Todd Windlan’s South Laurel Lady Cardinals continue to dominate in 50th District play, improving to 19-6 overall and 5-0 against district opponents with a convincing, 67-46, win over Whitley County.

Ronnie Collier’s Lady Colonels were hoping to pull off the upset, but never got on track, falling to 11-12, and 3-3.

Maci Messer led the Lady Cardinals with 20 points while Callie Jones added 15 points. Skeeter Mabe followed with 12 points.

Maddy Hopkins led Whitley County with 20 points while Jonna Rice added 13 points.

“Got off to a slow start and give credit to Whitley for coming in and outplaying us in the first half,” Windlan said. “I challenged our team at halftime and was glad to see how they responded in the second half. The whole team played very hard and executed well and outscored them 27-8 in the third quarter.

“Maci Messer was great in the 2nd half getting 16 of her game-high 20,” he sdded. “Callie Jones had 12 of her 15 in second half and found her shooting stroke as well. Skeeter Mabe fought off foul trouble and was key for us in the second half getting 12 points. Kenzie Fannin came off the bench and had a big fourth quarter getting 11 points in the quarter for all of her points.

“I thought Shelby Smith played a very good all-around game while only scoring one point, she was solid on the boards, made nice passes out of high post and defended well,” Windlan continued. “Lady Cards play Thursday at Corbin for another tough 50th District game. Go Cards.”
